Please be aware that the governing entity of the Riviera Maya has instituted a levy on visitors to aid in the environmental conservation of the region. Not every hotel is passing this levy on to their customers, many are absorbing the costs or adding them to their daily rates. Because of the discrepancies on how the levy is being collected it has not been included in the package pricing. It is possible that you will be asked upon checkout to pay this levy. Below is the official statement that we received: “The Municipalidad of Solidaridad in the Riviera Maya is one of the most beautiful places in the Mexican Caribbean. Tourism has been instrumental in driving the economic and social development of the region.
In an effort to continue to preserve, conserve and beautify the destination, the Municipality of Solidaridad has implemented a small environmental levy on visitors effective September 1, 2017. Hotels will collect 20 Mexican pesos per room per day on check out; the proceeds will be deposited in an environmental trust to fund local projects. The Municipalidad of Solidaridad thanks you for your understanding and support of this worthwhile endeavor.
Thank you and enjoy your visit.”
Currently the exchange rate for 20 pesos will be about $1.15 USD, per room per night. If you are asked to pay this, please be sure you receive a receipt for your payment.
